Surgery

MetroVet is lucky enough to have an experienced, confident vet whose strength is in surgical procedures. We are able to cater for many different cases, ranging from a standard Neutering, to an Exploratory Laparotomy. In other words – the surgeries we expect to the ones that can take us by surprise.

Our facilities are modern and our staff well trained in the best practices and procedures to ensure your pet is in safe hands. They are monitored closely throughout the surgery by our qualified Veterinary Nurse and are never short of cuddles and comfort before and after the procedure.

Admission is usually between 9am-10am where we will need 5 minutes of your time to fill out a form detailing the days procedure and the friendly staff are able to answer any questions or concerns you may have. For standard procedures, most patients will go home between 4pm-6pm. For those that need a little extra TLC after a more intricate procedure we are able to arrange transport with our very own driver to our near-by sister clinic – Village Vets, Winchmore Hill. So your pet can continue healing under professional supervision overnight.

PRE ANASTHETIC BLOOD TESTING

If your pet is over 7 years of age, we would recommend a Pre anaesthetic Blood test before going ahead with surgery. Like with us, when animals reach their senior years things may not be working as well as they once did. This will test the function of your pets liver and kidneys- very important organs as they metabolise the anaesthetic and pain relief. This will give us an idea of how they will fare under the anaesthetic and may alter our approach to the surgery if there is a fault.

INTRAVENOUS FLUIDS

Also to be given in conjunction with the Pre Anaesthetic blood test is Intravenous fluids (IVF). For poorly patients to increase hydration or those who have an increased anaesthetic risk I.e. elderly patients, we would recommend IVF. This helps to maintain the blood pressure and function of the liver and kidneys while your pet is anaesthetised, also contributing to a smoother recovery on the other side.
